Greg, I was doing timber inventory in lodgepole pine in Eastern OR in the 70's & could actually hear the beetles chewing. Talk about a surreal experience.
Beetle epidemics, like wildfires, are nature's way of harvesting timber. It is too bad the USFS could not/would not precommercial thin more aggressively.
