Subject: Re: Mountain Pine Beetle threshhold?

A decade or more back we were hit hard with the mountain pine beetle.
The timber stands that had a tight canopy were mostly wiped out.
Stands that had a more open canopy [release] like in a precommerical thinning opertation
were able to pitch the biggest percentage of the bettles out.

Perventive wise I'ld do some thinning and burn or chip the small dia. slash to keep the ips in check.
