Owens Cross Roads, AL | Alabama had a big movement of farmers from Ohio in the early 70's when beans were in the teens in the blackbelt area around Selma, AL. After plowing up the pastures, the beans yielded great for a year or two. Then the yields starting declining each year until most farmers were broke. Now most of the land is in CRP planted to pines. That blackground in west central Alabama and east central Mississippi is just plain mean ground to farm. When its wet, it is sticky, and when its dry, you can stick your entire hand down in the cracks. | |
