Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums. | I would agree that the truck crops should be the best. Strawberries, beans, sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash. Herbs and flowers do well for some too. Tobacco is still good, but there is no govt program anymore. They bought out the support and its open market driven now. We can gross about $5000/acre with broccoli, but it costs about $1200/acre to grow it, then you have to pay the harvest crew. Like most vegetables, its a risky crop, no crop insurance, big capital to get the crop in, no storage, you better have a market or it will rot in the cooler. You need an organized labor force and good sales. Roadside stand can sell a few acres. |
