southern MN | If you don't have area for bulk commodity crops, you will need to swap lots & lots of labor and risk to make up for it. No free lunch. The garden truck crops are the route to go, but you need lots of time & fussing with them, and marketing skills to sell them, and location to have buyers.
Good hay crop _can_ make better return than average on a small farm, if you have buyers & willing to invest in the machinery & the time to make a perfect crop. Again, risk & willing to invest time.
Some folks consider 3 acres small, some consider 180 acres small, so not sure what you have.
