Would it be advisable to reduce the plant population when reducing fertility inputs?

In some cases would it not be better to fallow some land and manage for high productivity on the remaining acres?

I would not think there are seed sources for open pollinated corn. If there are then corn could be managed much the same as it was in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Planting on 38" rows and 12" to 18" between corn plants.
