Western Nebraska
yields average to a little more. The growing season was dry, but wetter than the last 7 years of drought...we had ample irrigation water for a change. As far as I know, everything under irrigation here. County average yields around 21 bags. Yes lambsquarters is the weed to worry about...nightshade has been a headache forever...we're used to it. If you have access to Pickett combine, nightshade not so much a worry.
Is direct harvest mainstream in your area? We're trying new things and looking for answers in direct harvesting. Most use Pickett windrower here now, 10 years ago it was Speedy with a rod, now we're seeing a few trying MacDon swathing and Mac Don header on combine. Also a few with stripper header. No-tillers like stripper header as residue will not move after harvest. With energy, labor and machinery costs where they are....and now prices headed South, we'll ALL be looking into No-till. With profit levels for '09 looking dismal, maybe we'll try some NO-PLANT.
