Subject: Re: Grazing standing corn stalks

Greene County, Illinois
Have a friend that has been grazing standing corn for 4-5 years. I think his corn is more mature. He actually shells 8 rows and leaves 8 rows. With his yield monitor he knows what the corn is making. Then he determines how many pounds of corn per foot of row. Then he allows 10# of corn per cow per day and measures off rows and shells across the rows making blocks that equal one days feed. They eat the ears first, then the leaves, then start on the stalks. He usually has about seven blocks hot wired off at a time so he just goes down and moves one wire each day. Cheaper than feeding hay. Even in muddy years he gets along well, had to put some fabric down in gateway to keep it from getting too deep.
