Is it like the 90's gms and there is a lag time before it engages or does it engage the 4wd right away as soon as you turn the knob?

What is the trick to get into 4lo then and does it have a Neutral positon? I didn't notice a neutral on the ones I'm seeing........didn't look that hard either though.
