Twice we have seeded alfalfa into old hay ground for neighbours. Its a decent catch but it doesn't seem too long lived, maybe three or four years of production. We had a Flexicoil with a 3.5 inch paired row opener. Pulled really hard, only did about 3 mph. But slow speed reduces the amount of ridges you leave. Most of the time the sod falls back on itself and closes nice. One neighbour ran over the field with a heavy harrow to close up the rips better.
