Subject: RE: Chopping real green corn for silage question,

Chilliwack BC
Lots of corn around here is coming off at 80% moisture now. Some was already juicing as it was being filled. Some farms are chopping their grass silage very dry, almost hay, and putting a layer on the bottom of the bunker and putting the corn on top. I've heard of some people grinding hay and mixing it in with the corn as they fill as well.

Fields have the potential to get too wet and muddy in a short time so that's why people are jumping the gun a little now. In order to spread manure on corn ground now the deadline is usually the end of September, and you need a cover crop in so that influences the earlier chopping times as well.

We don't grow any, but may buy some later if farmers fill their bunkers and have excess. Lower yields here this year. I've heard 15-20 tons per acre. Last year was close to 30, year before was low 20's.
