First look at the three basics you will need for cattle: water, fences and handling facility. If the place you are looking at doesn't have them you will need to build/install or pay to have it done. And you really need the same water/fences/facility if you have 5 head or 50 head. They also need to be in place before you start bringing home cattle. Then decide if you want to go mostly pasture or purchased feed and/or hay. That will determine the number of head your acres will carry. Then decide if you want this to be a summer only or year around venture. Generally I think a cow/calf is the way to go with folks with more labor than capital. However with cattle there is generally a long time lag between startup and having anything to sell. And there is initial investment no matter what type of operation you start. Start small in which ever operation you choose. Start with quality cattle or you are going to waste a lot of time and energy trying to make silk purses out of sows ears.
