We did pumpkins a few years before we had a big drought and ran into labor issues. Biggest thing I would reccomend is don't plant all 12 acres to pumpkins unless you have other places to grow them. I would split it up and rotate pumpkins and corn or something along those lines to "try" to keep disease and insects down. 6 acres of pumpkins and 6 acres of corn will give you lots to sell.

I have some relatives that are on their 10th+ year of running a pumpkin patch close to town and it works great for them. Our patch wasn't close to town so everything had to be hauled which means time and money. That can be done but it is hard to compete with WalMart buying pumpkins by the pound a semi load at a time (had a neighbor that did that).
