west central Ohio | sounds like mites to me.
we had them 8 years ago. killed all chickens on farm and totaly cleaned the chicken house, then sprayed it with malathion.
restocked with clean stock,,,,,,,haven't seen them again, although we keep checking. the best place to find them is around the vent. you will see them moving around and the egg masses will be at the base of the feathers in the vent area.
