Thanks, Rich. I appreciate the tip. I've been using the scented talcum powder for the last 12 hours but I think I may switch to pancake syrup. It makes sense to me.

Thanks to everyone who offered their opinions. I plan to give the first-calf heifer another chance to be a mother next year. Since she went looking for a calf when I turned her back out with the rest of the herd, that tells me she does have some motherhood in her, just a little misdirected this time.
