Heifers are stupid. Don't get rid of her yet. If she brougth a live good calf into the world just give her some time. Even if she has to go this year dry, eat the loss and carry her on and then next year maybe stick her butt in a pen shortly before calving and grant yourself a lil assurance she will be with the said calf and no others around to bother her. It takes a little luck for them to self educate themselves how things are sposed to work. I have more patience for heifers. They are just plain over excited, scared, and stupid.
Now, as for getting old bossie cow to claim calf. O-no-mo or whatever it's called I have heard alot of people brag about. WD 40 this is the first time I have heard this claim. What we have used and have had great success with is Pancake Syrup.
Water it down first so you can apply it better and it isn't so hard to handle with. I don't know how much, just keep adding water so it still has a very heavy smell but isn't so thick like 80 weight oil on a 0 degree day.
Now, smear it all over the calf. Everywhere she smells and licks. Legs, Especially all over the face and bung and the belly chord. Now put cow in chute and put it in her mouth, smear it in her nose. above her nose and below her mouth, then give her another drink of it.
The sugary sweetness of it will help encourage her to lick the calf for it. They like that just like calves love molasses in thier grain.
You may get to the point where you have a bossy cow that will let a calf suck and plainly not want anything else to do with it. We have had those cases in the past where the cow did her job letting the calf eat but didn't hurt themselves cleaning and nurturing it. Heifers may be stupid but the cows are not........they know that isn't thier calf.........trying to get the point across to her what you want is the hardest part of the ordeal.
