Subject: John is correct

John has the correct formula. We've had a cool summer but the formula shows that full temps only go to 86. 86 is a very nice, not so hot summer day. So, we can have a cool summer and not be below on GDUs.

This is most relevent to corn which is a heat driven crop. Soybeans, on the otherhand, have maturities that are more influenced by day:night ratios. Delayed planting, extended periods of sun vs. clouds, etc. will influence maturity where temperatures have much less impact.

A good example if you want to "see" it is to find a place where you have a sign near a roadway that is lit at night. Have you ever noticed a "halo" of soybeans around the sign that stay green? That's because those soybeans have been in artificially long days.
