West Ky
Phil N we are one of them guys you mentioned here in W, Ky we put a lot of money into the wheat a lot! We have wheat tech to management our wheat for us and it reaped in the yields a few years ago. Averaging 75-100 bu yields in certain fields with different soil types much to our surprise. Last year we had a sever freeze and drought which dropped our average yields to around 40. This year we had a very wet fall and cold and wet early spring which hurt our stand some. Everything was shaping up though until we pulled the combines out in the field and the yields were about half of what we were expecting the reason why? Wheat streak! Instead of getting them big yeilds we got bit again by mother nature. Nothing we could of done or wheat tech could of done to prevent it. Our bean guys who manage our beans are saying now that to expect about a 30 bu average on the full season beans and 25 on the double crop beans. This is much better than last year when we averaged 10 bu over the whole crop but a couple of bad years can really tear ya a new one. With liquid N well over 500 dollars and the current price at Cargill at Hickman KY at $4.93 and next July is $5.39 we have to $6.50 at 50 bu to break even. We will be planting wheat in a month so if the prices stay as they are then we may not plant any wheat. Been shelling corn and the corn is doing about 100 and we are on the high end according to our seed man lots of farmers making in the 70-80 bu range. No rain and the elevators are absolutely killing us. Doesn't matter a whole lot if you have some good crops coming in but it is a big deal when you don't have a crop to sell.
