Your "old farmer" is correct. ALWAYS mow the stubble behind the combine. It will shade the young plant for the sun and heat. Best, but not popular, use a sickle mower to mow it. Batwing will scalp and windrow too much. Disc mower will do the same thing to a lesser extent.
