| Hawken Cougar makes good points. The putative difference between yields of Certified versus cleaned & treated "bin-run" (a couple years off certified) are so small that it would take dozens if not hundreds of replications for us to have any confidence at even the 95% level. I cannot think of any reason for an inherent difference in yield potential, except perhaps for grain-filling conditions (including Cu and Mo available) and overall health of the plant, for which the Certified grower *might* have an advantage in terms of seed vigor of the subsequent crop because he has invested more in growing this crop due to the expectation of a higher price for the Certified seed. However, this is likely to be extremely variable, due to the variation in skills and luck of individual producers.
Regarding a comment that HC made on yield being stable if no new varieties are developed: No, this wouldn't be true, because new races of rust, etc., continue to 'erode' the yields of existing varieties. | |
