Subject: RE: Soybeans and cool temperatures? saw 37 deg F a bit earlier tonight

Pocahontas County, IA
I attended a meeting yesterday featuring Palle Pedersen, the ISU soybean guy. His comments about the potential soybean yield for my neck of the woods, NC Iowa were sobering. The delayed planting , the wet cool conditions at planting , and the lack of rain in August have conspired against high yields. Though the plants are tall and appear great from the road, the nodes are far apart and the pod counts are low. Exactly what I have seen in my fields. He predicted small seed size based on the growing season and went on to say about 43 bu/ac would be a good yield for a year like this. Subtract more for the 15% replanted areas and I wonder where the yields will be? As I recall, USDA had the state of Iowa at 47 bu/ac in their last report. At that time there were no pods to count. As I understand it, assumptions were made based on population. Time will tell.
