Virginia | Sure looks like bear damage to me. Boar bears do the most damage. Sow bears do less.
Is the corn pulled over to the center of the area?? Bears will sit down, reach out, grab stalks, eat about 1/2 the ear and get another ear.
For about the last 15 years we've had bear damage nearly every year. It's gotten to the point now that I don't plant certain fields because of the black bear. Thus far I know they've been in at least 4 fields this year.
I shelled a field (17 acres) for a friend several years ago and he had several acres of total loss in this field.
The best way to spot damage is from a plane. If you walk through your fields I'd sure have some protection with me. You don't wanna get between a sow and her cubs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll try to get some pics of bears in corn this fall if you guys are interested. I usually get REAL close to them. They stay in the field until the last rows are harvested. | |
