KY
Soil Type and timing has a lot to do with which form of N fertilizer to select. NH3 is running about $0.34/unit of N here and my application costs to apply/knife in is $13.40 per acre with all overhead included. I like NH3 because of it's longevity in clay soils prior to denitrification but it's costly to apply. I can purchase 32% UAN solution for $0.36/unit of N and inject it for $6.30 per acre or spray it on preemerge for even less.

As far as drying out soils by using NH3...NH3 has a high affinity for water and does tie up some H2O at application...but that's pretty minor. The biggest negative is the ammonium ion knocking of Ca ions the CEC...I wind up using more lime on fields that have had NH3 apps over time.
