Centre county Pennsylvania, USA | The Penn State folks put footnotes on some of our soil tests that say they calculate CEC and % saturation using a maximum exchangeable calcium level of 15 meg/100g BECAUSE the calcium level in the sample indicates the probable presence of soluble calcium. I find your discussions of soil testing very interesting, our limestone soils are not as high in Ph as yours but we do use soil test results with a significant degree of skepticism. Our yield maps are showing greater variation in yields than are suggested by soil test results. We have come to the conclusion that soil moisture variability is the dominate cause of yield variability (and yield limits) here in our shallow limestone soils. Fertility is important, if we can get rainfall when needed.
Will try to find time to visit with you at the AFGC conference at Penn State in June of 2007, should have update on results from high Mg problem areas to share with you by then. |
