Have grown corn at various times over the years and in my experience, Canamaize is not necessarily the earliest corn variety out there. Some Pride varieties from the early 70's were at least as early. Does have the advantage of being able to harvest your own seed.

My purpose was to grow it for winter grazing for our cow herd. Canamaize had the best "standability" of any variety but it was low on palatability in my estimation as many of the stalks were not grazed wheras other varieties were grazed to the ground and the plots were left bare.

A neighbour observed that poplar trees have great standability but no one was raising them for feed.
