Subject: How deep to chisel ?

Been an expensive year so I'm gonna run what I got. I guess I'll disc chisel where I'll have corn on corn in '07 because a strip till bar is more money than my budget currently allows. I've always run 4" twisted shovels on my Glencoe 7400 about 8" deep but that really isn't fracturing any hardpan and residue isn't really a problem for me in the spring so I don't need to cover alot. Would a 3" twisted loosen the soil enough and could I run shallower and still have an environment where my roots will be happy next spring?
