Subject: Re: Wintering Beef Cows

Western Nebraska
Our operation is in the western end of Nebraska so we are dealing with a different environment than you are. We run our cows on corn stocks from the end of November through the first week or two of April. Generally our winters are fairly dry so we don't usually have a problem with mud. We move them fairly regularly so that the quality of the feed stays pretty high. If they need it we will supplement protein by feeding about 5 lbs of alfalfa every few days. The younger cows might get a little more TLC than the older ones do, but generally speaking they get very little supplementation. They just exist on corn stocks and anything else they can find to graze in the fields.
