Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois | Reading this thread reminds me of one of Grandad's favorite stories. According to the way he told it, he went up north to buy a purebred bull. He took the train, didn't know if he would buy the bull or not. When he got to the farm and looked over the bull, it was exactly what he needed for his cows. He went to the Western Union office to telegraph his wife to send up the hired man with a truck for the bull. He composed a message, and the telegraph operator told him the price to send it, it was so many dollars per word, and quite expensive, as Grandpa was quite wordey in his stories. Finally Grandpa said he condensed the telegraph down to one word, and told the telegraph operator to just send, "Comfortable". The telegraph operator was confused, and asked Grandpa if his wife would understand what he meant, as the telegrapher operator sure couldn't figure it out. "Sure, he said. My wife is a slow reader. She will read the word very slowly, and understand: Com....for.....ta.....bull." |
