I would second the idea of wintering them on standing cornstalks if you can. You will probably see a big jump in condition too. Key is to harvest the corn as high as possible without knife rolls etc. Later maybe give them access to some woods or a windbreak for protection from the wind. You can also set out big round bales about 20 ft apart in rows in a particularly poor pasture area, put 2 wire electric fence along the sides and expose bales by moving a cross wire as needed.
