Subject: RE: How many pig farmers here???

I have 8 Berkshire sows so I don't claim to be in the same class as the rest of you but a least there are pigs on the farm. I finish out as many as I can sell directly to my customers and sell the excess as barbeque pigs at 40#. I can't imagine selling hogs at market prices with todays feed costs. The pigs are my excuse to get out of the house in the winter. I can tend to them in as little 15 minutes if it's cold and nasty or stretch it out to a hour or more if I want to stay out. I also buy feeder steers and finish them out for direct sales but I don't get them same satisfaction from them as with the pigs which I breed, farrow, and finish. There is nothing that compares to home raised pork and beef. BTW I'm on the Eastern Shore of MD which is chicken country. I love to use the chicken manure but would hate to raise the chickens. I've always considered raising chickens to be indentured servitude to the integrator and to Farm Credit.
