Subject: RE: Wintering Beef Cows

northwest tennessee
I feed hay in rolls and have mud to deal with too. I feed some in racks until it gets muddy or is raining and then I unroll hay. I intensive graze and I will unroll what they will eat at one time in the paddocks and turn them to it as they need it. This also scatters the manure better and may be the only fertilizer I will be able to afford from now on. I will unroll 3 or 4 days worth of hay at a time and then turn to it and try to cut down on the tractor use. I also will graze stalks if I have them and sow some ryegrass if needed in some spots. Also on some hay ground I will not cut the last cutting and graze it as needed. I used to be against the unrolling but it is like anything else when the cows get used to eating it that way they dont waste much at all if the right amount is put out.
