SW Ohio | I'll give my two cents, ok maybe one, I can never get all my thoughts into one post.
I quit milking nine years ago, 90 wet jerseys in an older setup, 120 hours aweek minimum and I was tired and weary.
Me thinks, and I have not been following milk markets at all, that in a year or two the cycle will swing to where dairy is not as rosy as in the past five years, that would be a good time to start ( I quit on an upswing cycle and my timing was good).
A small one man dairy is a dinosaur, it may work but it is an uphill battle. Economies of scale say the bigger guys are gonna out do you on cost of production, so you have to be a very low cost producer, think cheap in every way.
When I still cared, I always thought an intensive grazing setup was the only way for the little guy to make it, worth looking into. | |
