I have seen my uncle's pannel that was 500 meters away and hooked on an underground wire blast off due to lightning on his irrigation pipes. Of course it took the pump too....
The cure? He burried a nice network of grounding wire around his well, and hooked the pipe where his pump hang to that network. of course he hooked his pump to that network too, but the most important is that the the descending pipe is grounded. That was some 30 years ago! Since then NO PROBLEMS :D

Remember that your pipes, your pivot and other irrigation gear is a good antenna that kind of attracts lightnings!
