Long time reader first time poster. Love the input and philosphies of the regular posters on the board.

Timing is critical when making the dicision to swath. I generally start swathing when I see 30%+ color change in the seeds on the main stem. The "experts" say you can wait upto 60% color change without much loss due to shattering but from my expriences if you let it get that ripe shatter loss can be significant especially in a uneven crop stand. It also increases the chance of frost damage. Last year we significantly increased our acres and we swathed one field on the early side and the side size was noticibly smaller.

* Remember to only count the seeds on the main stem.
