Calendar and location is the answer to your question, plus size/quality of other stuff, weeds/foxtail/millet, need to have it done before frost and as days get shorter more difficult to dry down. If it does not dry it will mold in the bale. This would make what we call grinding hay or filler, in drought years happy to get it. Might be hard to feed in bale rings as they will sort out the straw and it will become bedding. It is low quality forage with some sweeter added, the soybeans of which mold easy and get hard as a rock. That is what happened to Grandfather, baled to green. We have more tools and his experience to avoid that. Good Luck.
