Subject: Soybean hay

Cullom, Illinois
I've double cropped soybeans into my wheat stubble. I'd like to bale 10 acres or so to use for background feed for some steers. When is the best time to cut the soybeans? Obviously before the leaves turn. The hay will have some wheat straw mixed in with it. And I plan on adding corn and supplement to balance my ration. Do you try to get any benefit from the soybeans in the pods or are they not mature enough? My only experience with soybeans came about 15 years ago when I suggested baling some to my grandfather. His immediate answer was DON'T DO IT. This from a man that grew up in the depression and would do anything to save money. His experience was with mowed soybean hay in a barn that he said they had to cut out with a saw. And the itch was unbearable. I plan on round baling mine.
