Canmore Ab. Canada | Well, we use plain simple touchdown or roundup. I believe the trick is timing. You want to spray before a killing frost but later, after mid september, is better. We try to get the best circumstances possible as I'm sure you all do.
Our falls can be dusty so we wait for a shower or heavy dew to clean the plants. We spray in the mornings only but after the dew is nearly gone. Use as little water as possible while still getting good coverage. We will often spray, wait three days and cut hay.
Maybe we are just lucky but no fancy cocktails here. If you wish to spend more money killing alfalfa just apply more glyphosate. We use one litre and have tried more, 2 and 3 litres, under monsanto reps supervision, and found no better control. I would say we get nearly 100% control over the 20 years we have done this.
Spring spraying of glyphosate on alfalfa is wasted, August is not even great. Later fall when that plant is putting down reserves for winter is best.
Just my experience, Keep it simple! Dan... | |
