Subject: Calves born without anus?

West Central Wisconsin
Was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem? We have a 65 cow herd of holsteins in west central Wisconsin and I can remember this occurring about 6 or 7 times in the last 12 years. Most recently this week, a month and a half ago and last fall. They normally have a shallow depression at the location of the anus but it is covered shut with skin/hide. This last one could be penetrated about two inches before feeling resistance. Our vet feels it occurs in the development of the fetus and is not a nutritional or genetic trait. The calf may drink once or twice before refusing the bottle. It will then lay in misery with a slight bloat look until the problem is discovered and has to be put down. I have talked to a number of farmers who have never heard of such a thing and frankly I feel this is a very high occurrance on one farm. Has anyone else had this happen?
