I have been using a small tupperware container from the kitchen. (borrowed it :) ) Drilled lots of holes in it so it would sink. I put the pool chlorine tablets you can buy at W-mart.
I have not had to clean any waters, both tanks or auto for a couple of summers now and notice no difference in consumption.
The tablet container lists how many for how many gallons. Just do some quick math on approx how many gallons go through the tank in a day and use this as the capacity of the "pool".
Usually have to put tablets in once every week. Just grab the container a put a couple in.
