Boone/Hendricks Counties, IN | My first question...is there any pasture at all...a rotation pasture would probably be much better. If not there are some things to consider...the worst is a disease called Caseous lymphadenitis (CL). It is a chronic contagious disease affecting mainly sheep and goats. This disease is also called pseudobulerculosis or often "abscesses," and has been referred to as the curse of the goat industry throughout the world. If you put a huge number in a confined area and you will have it...it is a spore and stays in the confinement area for a long time...probably forever if you run animals in and out...If abscesses affects more than one lymph node, the carcass will be condemned at slaughter. About 30% of goats have it. You will have to watch closely. Boars goats, although they look tough have a higher morality rate compared to Kikos...IMO. They are rumens...they are made for forage and prefer to browse...eat the high stuff. They are more picky about what they eat than people believe. You will need to watch them closely for the diseases and illnesses they get. There is a university in Oklahoma...Langston University that does a lot with goats...Also Kentucky has a great goat program. They put on workshops worth going to. Interesting idea...Good luck |
