It was suggested to me that I use the curlex instead of straw by my excavator guy since this ditch can run level full in heavy rain flows and I knew with the hard clay bottom it was going to take a while for grass to get established good. He does lots of ditch work for the county so he has a lot of experience. The straw bales should be helpful in slowing the flow down but I guess it's a judgment call. Here is the sort of flows this ditch can get notice this was on 11/14/93 so it can be high flow and deep at about any time depending on the weather and heaviness of rains.
