| There isn't necessarily a quality advantage to baleage, although there can be if using it opens up a window where you couldn't bale dry hay. That's often the case with Alfalfa and wheat here in May. I've hauled alfalfa baleage that was 210 RFV. With our climate, it's pretty hard to do that with dry hay because of leaf shatter. We've wrapped wheat, rye, brome, a little fescue, alfalfa, sorghum sudan, ryegrass, and maybe a couple things I've forgot. Main thing is don't try to wrap it too wet. You will have less dry matter loss in storage with wrapping, but you will haul and feed more tons. If you are currently storing all your hay outside, the dry matter difference and rot would go a long ways to paying for making baleage. We started out with a 8465 case IH. Currently run a CaseIH RBX 462 and 8575 and get along good with both. Our current wrapper only wraps the squares though. I'd like one that would do both. | |
