Thanks for sharing the differences in crude protein between the merger and the rake. We use a Claas 1550 double rake ahead of the Claas 830 chopper and usually our moistures are better than 60 %. Seeing the 3% difference you have seen, I think we definitely want to keep the alfalfa as wet as possible to minimize the leaf loss. Like you said, the price of a merger, a single purpose machine, is very steep. At least with the 1550, we can and do use it for dry hay also.
