Saronville NE | We had almost a thousand acres of millet last yr, it was pearl and german both, going to have some again, this yr pry bout 400 acres. The pearl's biggest secret, cut it early, in all honesty, if its planted early, cut it twice before fall. It takes a long time to dry out if cut when 6' tall, if you could run a macerator thru it after layin about 4-5 days, then you could pry get it it up in 7-9 days, we had some lay last yr for 2 weeks, because, we cut it tall because it kept raining and never could get in there. Makes really good hay but MAKE sure you get it baled dry or it will really be sh*t, lots worse then tuff alfalfa. We plant about 25-28 lbs, keeps the stems finer and drys faster and makes better hay. Dont put much fertilizer on it or it will be high in nitrates, we only put about 30 lbs on, also if this irrigated dont water much, stunts the growth and leaches the little bit of fert down, cause the roots are real shallow. We ve had it on pivots where, the dryland corners were taller and better than the irrigated.
On yr bean hay cut it when the leaves are still green, bascially let it dry completly out and bale like alfalfa when you can hold the leaves on, thats my experience, havent done much of it so very little experience | |
