Rivers, MB | Discovered yesterday that we had 185 acres of canola where one primary on our Morris air drill did not seed consistently. When we seeded the fields, our rate was a little bit light and we were puzzled by that but there was nothing we could do after the fact. When cleaning out the drill after the fields, found the top of a canola bag (the part that comes off when the string is pulled out) all crunched up and it fell out of one of the metering wheels. We hoped it had only reduced the rate but it became apparent once the canola emerged that the rate was near zero on that one wheel. Thankfully, it was at the end of the drill so we had 1 16' strip every 100' as opposed to 8' strips every 50. Ended up seeding all the strips today with a 14' hoe drill we have for little jobs. At least the misses were parallel to the highway!!! Not so noticeable.
Hearing other guys post on here about seeding to deep or too shallow or whatever reminded me that all of us have little or big blunders that we just have to deal with. Not the first time and definitely not the last.
Good luck everyone. Sounds like some guys are too wet and others couldn't buy a rain this year. Still hoping for the perfect year. | |
