I am not a cattleman nor a hay baler, but it is a common practice here in Georgia. I think the main think is to cut it before it becomes too "stemmy" (?), definitely before it boots, as that maximizes forage value and palatability. I think the most common mistake is cutting it too late. I know nothing about anything special they do in raking, tethering, or baling.
