i guess i look at it not selling to the big farmer, but selling a big amount.. why don't you get some farmers together and do the same thing.. you do the paper work and incur the cost of it.. why don't you put some farmers together and sell the grain in 100,000 bu increments. why don't you incur the hassel and extra costs of doing business that way but get the benefit also..

as far as the timing goes for the fert purchase.. Did you stop to think that maybe the bigger sale was in communication with the dealer before the actual purchase.. We stay in contact with our fert dealer yr round, and while it may not be every week, it is at least once a month depending on the season, and we know what is going down before that day the sale is made.. I bet the smaller sale prob made contact once about the sale, and was not able to make a timely decision.
