Subject: RE: Cracks with 1 curvetine?

Driftless SW Wisconsin

We have a lot of folks that start with one std rubber and one Curvetine XR mostly in worked ground. This helps a lot compared to two rubber in many conditions especially as we saw this spring. However in many stale seedbed situations, the 1/2" radial size difference between the 13" OD Curvetine and the 12" OD std rubber tire prevents the CT from getting down where we like to see it run and reduces the dimpling/waffle iron pattern we rely on to reduce crusting problems.

I suggest to folks in mostly worked ground to start with one CT per row but try one end row with two so when you turn you will have two rows with double CT together and see if you can tell a difference in emergence.

Almost everyone comes back the second year and adds the second side.

Running one of each does let you be a little less precise on the tailpiece spring pressure. One of each is like insurance in a conventional tillage system. Sometimes it will help you a lot but generally does not hurt you in a wide range of conditions compared to to std rubber.

Which reminds me - we have had several customers report that the John Deere standard tailpiece spring was too heavy with two Curvetines even in the lightest notch in some very wet soils this spring.  Customers also report changing the spring to the new lighter spring rate veresion from JD parts was just about perfect. It is about 1/2 the spring rate and down force of the std spring and seems like something to specify on a new planter.

Who uses the 4th notch with the std spring????
