Medic is more common than you think. One medic is a common weed in lawns, it is commonly called Japanese clover in this area, but it really is Black Medic. I think alfalfa is actually in the medic family. I remember hearing of it being used as a cover crop in Australia and a knew a graduate student that fiddled around with Black Medic as a rotational cover crop at Washington State University about 20 years ago. Google has lots of info on Medic.
