Subject: Re: spike closing wheels- conventional tillage

We ran 2 martins with drag chains on our 7200 planter in conventional tillage and we've got the best stand we have ever had. It might be a very localized issue, but I thought I was getting just enough compaction over the seed with rubber tires and had emergence problems especially where it was a little wetter than ideal. I don't run any downpressure and the wheels are spread far enough apart that I don't think they could disturb the seed. I'm getting the feeling that we will all run some type of non-traditional closing wheel to improve emergence (even just a little) to get to that next level of yield (ie. there are probably 25 small things we'll do as time goes on to improve yields - the high prices are paying us to do it - we have to overproduce somehow :-)

Thanks,

Pat
